Free Basketball Clinics In Derby

Two free basketball clinics with NBA player development coach Franklin Martin and NCAA official Dennis Kelly are scheduled for this month in Derby.

The clinics will be Sunday, June 4 and Sunday, June 11, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Derby Veterans Community Center on Fifth Street.

The clinics are open for Derby youths from 8 to 16 years old.

Derby High Alum Trying For NCAA Baseball Title

CONTRIBUTEDA Derby High School graduate hopes to help lead his college team to a national baseball championship beginning Friday.

Sal Frosceno Jr., who graduated from Derby High in 2014, is currently a junior at the University of Massachusetts-Boston, where he is a communications major.

He’s also a three-year starter as a center fielder on the Beacons baseball team, which amassed a school-record 37 wins this year en route to winning the Little East Conference and New England regional tournament.

Ansonia Celebrates Baseball Coach’s 500th Win

CONTRIBUTEDIt was a ceremony that inspired emotions ranging from goose bumps, tears and joy as more than 100 people gathered at Matthew “Pop” Shortell Field at Nolan Field on Wednesday afternoon for a moving tribute honoring longtime Ansonia High School baseball coach Mike Vacca on his recent 500th win.

The event preceded Ansonia’s scheduled baseball game versus Oxford.

Ansonia Little League Remembers Leah Rondon

Little League Opening Days are always special — the national anthem, the smell of freshly cut grass, the chance for kids to make new friends while playing the national pastime.

But Saturday’s opening day in Ansonia was a little more special than usual, thanks to some recent improvements and a tribute to the memory of a 6-year-old girl.
