Ken Marcucio Sr. stood watch over the Little League sports complex in Derby Saturday, as 102 boys and 40 girls ran around in their uniforms, tossing baseballs and meeting up with teammates as they started the season on a picture perfect opening day.
“It’s an important part of their life,” said Marcucio, the league’s president, as the players warmed up and took season photos on the league’s opening day. “That’s why I stayed involved for so long.”
How long is so long? Forty years as president of Derby Little League.
For his work and dedication, the Little League complex was named for Marcucio in a dedication ceremony Saturday before the opening pitch.

Senior basketball players Tierney Lawlor and Melissa Tirella just completed two of the most successful careers in the history of Ansonia High School girls’ basketball.
For the past four years, when you played Ansonia, you had to deal with these two. They have been in the lineup ever since their freshman year.
Tierney started all 92 games and Melissa started 88 out of 92 games in their careers. They were both two year captains and for the past three years, rarely if ever, came out of a game.

Going in to Saturday’s Class S championship football game in East Hartford, most would consider the Ansonia Chargers favorites over the North Branford Thunderbirds.
But as Chargers coach Tom Brockett pointed out, North Branford won’t be pushovers.
“North Branford is going to be a great challenge for us,” Brockett said. “They are well-coached, have great players at the skill positions and are led by a great quarterback. They have one of the best offenses in Connecticut.”
The Chargers are gunning for their 18th state title Saturday at Rentschler Field. Top-seeded Ansonia (13-0) faces third-seeded North Branford (12-0) at 10:30 a.m. on UConn’s field.
