The lawyer representing former Oxford Tax Collector Karen Guillet in a criminal case said he has completed reviewing evidence provided by prosecutors and has begun discussions regarding a resolution.
“We had an exchange of ideas,” the lawyer, Dominick Thomas, said outside court Tuesday morning. He did not specify what kind of resolution he is trying to work out.
Guillet’s case was continued to May 31 after Thomas discussed the case with prosecutors behind closed doors.
She is charged with one count of first-degree larceny and six counts of first-degree forgery. She is accused of stealing cash from taxpayers and forging documents to cover her tracks.
Guillet, the town’s elected tax collector for some 20 years, was arrested in late November after a two-year investigation by state police.
The arrest warrant in the case said Guillet collected money and did not credit accounts, all the while living a lavish lifestyle.
In addition to the criminal case, the town has a civil lawsuit pending against Guillet, claiming she stole more than $600,000 — more than state police alleged in the warrant investigators received to charge Guillet.
That case was the subject of a 45-minute executive session during a February meeting of the Board of Selectmen, during which Board of Finance members and town officials also participated.
After the meeting adjourned, First Selectman George Temple suggested the town would get “a little more aggressive” with discovery requests in that case. The last court filing in that case was last April, according to state Judicial Branch records.
The town’s Selectmen also recently voted to ask a judge how to proceed with straightening out a list of delinquent taxpayers in town. Click here to read more.
