Former Oxford Tax Collector Transferred To Halfway House

Karen Guillet, the former Oxford tax collector given a four-year prison term for stealing nearly $250,000 from town coffers, has been transferred to a halfway house after serving more than two years in prison.

Guillet, 65, now lives at Johnson/Silliman House, a 26-bed facility in Hartford designed to prepare female offenders for transition back into the community.

She was transferred to the facility Thursday (March 12).

Why?

Was it to feed a gambling addiction? Buy drugs? Was she struggling to pay her bills?

Temple Opposes Former Oxford Tax Collector’s Release

Guillet: I Have No Integrity Left

Just before sending former Oxford Tax Collector Karen Guillet to prison for four years Wednesday, Judge Richard Arnold held a thick stack of documents in his hand called the pre-sentence investigation.

It was a court-prepared report meant to give the judge a glimpse into Guillet’s background, paint a picture of who she is and, possibly, provide a clue as to why she stole $243,902.18 from Oxford taxpayers.

Video: Guillet Says She Doesn’t Deserve Forgiveness

Judge Richard Arnold sentenced former Oxford Tax Collector Karen Guillet to serve four years in prison Wednesday after a sentencing at Superior Court in Milford that lasted nearly an hour.

Ms. Guillet, you have brought shame upon everybody you have touched,” Judge Arnold said before handing down the four-year term on a single count of first-degree larceny to which Guillet pleaded guilty in July. She was arrested by state police — on charges of stealing taxpayer money — last November.

In addition to the prison time, Guillet will be on probation for five years after getting out of jail, during which Judge Arnold ordered her to pay a total of $243,902.18 to the town.

No Pension For Ex-Oxford Tax Collector

Attorney General George Jepsen announced Wednesday that former Oxford Tax Collector Karen Guillet’s pension has been revoked in full.”

According to a press release issued by Jepsen’s office Wednesday about 11:30 a.m., Guillet has signed a stipulation for judgment” agreeing to the revocation of her pension — which would have paid her $1,814.33 monthly, or $21,776 per year.

Guillet is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 29 in Superior Court in Milford after pleading guilty in July to first-degree larceny, a felony, for stealing money from Oxford taxpayers.

Lawsuit Targets Guillet’s Pension

The state’s attorney general filed a civil lawsuit today seeking to revoke or reduce former Oxford tax collector Karen Guillet’s pension.

Guillet is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 29 in Superior Court in Milford after pleading guilty in July to first-degree larceny, a felony. 

Connecticut law allows a public official’s pension to be revoked or reduced if the public official is convicted of a crime connected to his or her public office.

Guillet stands to collect a pension of $1,814.33 per month, which works out to $21,771.96 annually, according to a spokesperson for the attorney general’s office.
