Oxford’s Don Pelletier, 62, has collected about 500 signatures on a petition calling for the town’s former tax collector to spend the next five years in prison, Oxford Patch reports.
“I didn’t do this for publicity; I did it because I stand up for what is right,” Pelletier told Patch.
Karen Guillet pleaded guilty in July to first-degree larceny after stealing $243,902 while she was the town’s tax collector.
She faces a maximum prison sentence of 12 years, which will be suspended after serving five years.
Her attorney, Dominick Thomas, will have the chance Oct. 29 to argue for less than the maximum possible sentence.
While state police and prosecutors put the stolen amount at $243,902, the town also has a civil lawsuit pending that puts the dollar amount closer to $670,000.
