Former Oxford Tax Collector Karen Guillet accepted a plea bargain Tuesday morning that could see her serve five years behind bars.
Guillet pleaded guilty to first-degree larceny, a felony. She faces a maximum sentence of 12 years in prison suspended after serving five years, plus five years probation.
In addition, Guillet will have to pay back the $243,902.18 authorities charged her with stealing from Oxford.

When the town of Oxford sued the state two months ago, officials said it was a necessary step to get a judge to resolve the mess in its tax office left by the alleged embezzlement of former tax collector Karen Guillet.
Ten days ago the state officially responded to the suit. Its message, briefly: you should have just asked us first.

Oxford officials are taking hundreds of names and millions of dollars off a controversial list of delinquent taxpayers distributed in February.
Tax Collector Cayenne Spremullo made the announcement during a press conference at Town Hall Tuesday, called to discuss a lawsuit the town filed against the state to resolve issues stemming from the alleged theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars by Spremullo’s predecessor, Karen Guillet.

The Town of Oxford has filed a lawsuit asking a judge how to fix issues stemming from the alleged theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars by former Tax Collector Karen Guillet.
The suit was filed Thursday at Superior Court in Milford, according to court records. The listed defendant is the state’s Office of Policy and Management, a part of the executive branch which deals with property tax issues, among other things.

The lawyer representing former Oxford Tax Collector Karen Guillet in a criminal case said he has completed reviewing evidence provided by prosecutors and has begun discussions regarding a resolution.
“We had an exchange of ideas,” the lawyer, Dominick Thomas, said outside court Tuesday morning. He did not specify what kind of resolution he is trying to work out.
Guillet’s case was continued to May 31 after Thomas discussed the case with prosecutors behind closed doors.

Oxford Selectmen will ask a Superior Court judge how to proceed in resolving issues stemming from the alleged theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars by former Tax Collector Karen Guillet.
At a Selectmen meeting April 4, town attorney Kevin Condon described the move made as the first step in straightening out the town’s “delinquent” tax list. The list was compiled in February, shortly after First Selectman George Temple took office.

The criminal case against former Oxford Tax Collector Karen Guillet was continued Thursday at Superior Court in Milford so her lawyer can finish reviewing documentary evidence in the case.
Guillet appeared briefly before Judge Richard Arnold just after 10 a.m., where her lawyer, Dominick Thomas, said he would “be able to discuss this matter in much more substance” with prosecutors if he could get a continuance to April 25.

Oxford First Selectman George Temple apologized Wednesday for offending residents, but said releasing a list with some 2,000 delinquent tax accounts had to be done.
“Nobody in this town elected me to be a coward and I’m not backing away from a difficult situation. We’re going to straighten this out,” Temple said.
