The criminal case against former Oxford Tax Collector Karen Guillet was continued Thursday at Superior Court in Milford so her lawyer can finish reviewing documentary evidence in the case.
Guillet appeared briefly before Judge Richard Arnold just after 10 a.m., where her lawyer, Dominick Thomas, said he would “be able to discuss this matter in much more substance” with prosecutors if he could get a continuance to April 25.
Arnold then continued the case.
Outside the courtroom, Thomas said he should be done reviewing the evidence provided by prosecutors by next month, when Guillet is now scheduled to appear in the case for the sixth time.
“At this point, the amount of time is satisfactory to take a look and complete our review of the discovery,” he said.
Guillet is charged with one count of first-degree larceny and six counts of first-degree forgery. She is accused of stealing cash from taxpayers and forging documents to cover her tracks.
She was silent during her appearance Thursday and left court immediately afterward.
Guillet, the town’s elected tax collector for some 20 years, was arrested in late November after a two-year investigation by state police.
In addition to the criminal case, the town has a civil lawsuit pending against Guillet, claiming she stole more than $600,000 — more than state police allege in the warrant investigators received to charge Guillet.
That case was the subject of a 45-minute executive session during a Feb. 27 meeting of the Board of Selectmen during which Board of Finance members and town officials also participated.
After the meeting adjourned, First Selectman George Temple suggested the town would get “a little more aggressive” with discovery requests in that case. The last court filing in that case was last April, according to state Judicial Branch records.
