You may have already heard of this “test” as it has been publicized on a number of news programs this past week as well as the internet. (A New Haven principal was placed on leave last month after witnessing students take the test, the New Haven Register reported.)

This “cinnamon test” poses a potential health risk to children.

The subject swallows a spoon full of cinnamon and the test is whether they can actually swallow it. The problem is that the cinnamon absorbs saliva in the throat and is difficult or impossible to swallow. The result may be difficulty in breathing and associated physical reactions.

Please take a minute to talk with your children about the risks of taking this “test”. Kids sometimes do foolish things, whether on a dare or to make someone laugh. A conversation with you will help your children to make good decisions.
