Voters re-elected First Selectwoman Mary Ann Drayton-Rogers by a slim margin Tuesday.

Drayton-Rogers, a Democrat now entering her second term as First Selectwoman, received 1,895 votes, according to unofficial results.

Republican candidate David Haversat received 1,862 votes — a difference of just 33 votes.

Democrats camped out at the Colonial Tavern on Hawley Road Tuesday after polls closed at Quaker Farms School quietly awaiting the results.

As the unofficial tally was relayed by telephone at about 8:45 p.m., the silence erupted into a party with cheers and hugs of congratulations throughout the room (see video).

Drayton-Rogers, with tears in her eyes, said she was grateful that the majority of voters recognized her campaign focused on real issues.

She added that voters were not swayed by the Republicans’ “misinformation and untruths.”

“The honesty and integrity of our campaign won out in the long run,” she said.

However, while unable to unseat Drayton-Rogers, the Republicans walked away with majority representation on most of the town’s boards and commissions, including the Board of Education, the Board of Finance, and three of the four spots on the town’s Planning and Zoning Commission.

At Republican headquarters on Route 67, Haversat and his supporters quietly sat around waiting for results.

A loud, “no,’’ erupted from supporters when the results finally came in and showed he only lost by 33 votes.

Haversat’s Republican running mate David Yish, a political newcomer, won a spot on the Board of Selectmen with 1,878 votes. Democrat David McKane received 1,871 votes, earning him re-election.

However, Haversat said the votes between he and McKane were so close there will likely be a recount.

Haversat, 31, thanked his supporters and was visibly disappointed that he had lost by such a close margin.

“To lose by 33 votes is hard,’’ Haversat said. “But I want to thank all the people who voted for me and to all the people who helped in this campaign.’’

Yish, 42, who underwent a successful heart transplant several years ago, said his win was “bittersweet,’’ because Haversat lost.

“You couldn’t ask for a better person to run with. He (Haversat) did an incredible job,’’ Yish said.

Republican August “Augie” Palmer lost his bid for a seat on the Planning and Zoning Commission, garnering 1,452 votes.

Palmer, a former First Selectman, said that this was his last bid at politics, but said he will remain active in the GOP party.

He said he’d be keeping an eye on Drayton-Rogers. “She’s a terrible first selectman and a bully,’’ Palmer said, a comment reflective of the sometimes nasty campaign between town Democrats and Republicans.

The crowded race for the Planning and Zoning Commission that pitted independents — and current Planning and Zoning Board members — Vinny Vizzo, Ed Hellauer and Eric Tichy against Palmer ended with none of the candidates being elected.

Still, Vizzo said all he wanted to do was keep Palmer off the town’s Planning and Zoning Commission.

“What we wanted to do was to save the town from the wrath of Palmer and Haversat and that is exactly what we did,” he said.

Retaining their seats on P&Z were Republican incumbents Pat Cocchiarella, and Bonnie Bartosiak, while newcomers Republican Alan Gladstone and Democrat William Johnson both won two-year terms.

In other races, incumbent Democratic Town Clerk Margaret Potts-West defeated Republican challenger Linda Crowe by 606 votes for Town Clerk.

Incumbent Town Treasurer Michael Angelini defeated Democrat Kathy Johnson by 146 votes.

New terms will begin on Nov. 17.

  1. Congratulations Mary Ann, Dave M., and Dave Y.

Haversat lost because of PALMER! Yes, the town wanted change, but it clearly did NOT want Palmer nor his apprentice and that is one of the reasons why Haversat lost. Mary Ann won because people believed in her, whether it was by 33 votes or 100 votes, she still won, and people did NOT believe the scare tactics of KOG, which I believe is another reason why Haversat lost.

Look at what Palmer said in the above article, once again, saying nasty things when he loses. THAT is EXACTLY why Haversat lost because he could not control Palmer.

Republicans, blame Palmer for him being a nasty commented person and someone who only cares about himself and blame Haversat and the Republican Party for NOT coming out against Palmer once he forced himself onto their ticket!

  2. A very close race as voters awaited the fate of Oxford. An important election and the results clearly show a divide in town with almost a 50/50 split. The difference in the number of votes 33 was marginal and it is sure to be an interesting year. Hopefully, the reelected First Selectman and running mate keep an open mind and work for Oxford not for themselves. For the good of Oxford, I will also keep an open mind. She may have won the election but not the hearts and minds of town with so many voices still in opposition. This will be an interesting 2 years. I hope they will learn from their mistakes now that they have been given a marginal second chance. Oxford deserves better.

  3. So let me get this straight-Palmer says Mary Ann Drayton Rogers is a bully. Can you recall Palmer as First selectman. He’s describing Mary Ann as a bully. How ridiculous can the man get?
Another Republican web site says the following “MAD-R and McKane, just pay the bills, turn out the lights when not in use and enjoy your short two year stay.”
That’s the problem with some of these Oxford Republicans. It’s there inability to just simply wish people well. Offering warm hearted support is beyond the abilities. being sore losers and wishing people ill is right up there alley.
Oxford residents are all one. The election is over. Can they at least give the appearance of being civil? It’s just impossible for some of these Republican bullies and bores!

  4. It is apparent that you can win an election by calling your opposition liars without basis or fact. If you say it enough times people start to believe you. Maryann won this election by deceit. Her victory will be short lived for she now needs to work with the newly elected boards and commissions that have accrued more votes that she had. She has no mandate but squeaked by on a platform of distortions. They will now have to walk the talk. Lets hope they are up to the task for the good of the town.

  5. Hey director…I got an email tonight, guess what, Oxford LOST its case against Garden Homes today. Supposedly, the Judge said that because Oxford only had 1% of its housing as affordable and the state statute says 10% must be affordable, Oxford was found not to be in compliance. Also, the Judge supposedly said Oxford had some of the least regulations in ALL OF THE STATE.

You know what this means, Mary Ann was RIGHT and KOG and the Republicans were WRONG! You can’t stop a developer when they propose a valid Affordable Housing project. The only way to control this is to have tough regulations, which the Republicans and KOG, were against!

So guess what, Mary Ann was right, KOG and the Republicans were wrong, and now Oxford has you to blame for making the Planning and Zoning’s initiative into a political one.

You guys are the ones who have hurt Oxford and we’ll do everything in our power to make sure Oxford residents remember who was FOR regulations and who was AGAINST them.

  6. CrazyinOxford was absolutely right with there earlier post. There were several republicans on the ticket I would have liked to vote for, but after the last election when Palmer was voted out of office and one of the newly elected repubs gave him his seat I didn’t want to take any chances. The only bully and the first to come out swinging with nasty rhetoric is Palmer. He has never respected the vote of the people as long as he has been involved in town politics. The republican party in town has had quite a few good leaders, but most have been bullied out thanks to Palmer. Hey Palmer! the people have spoken get lost.
Please define affordable housing? This term has been thrown around through the entire election. If you take it in relative terms then a few towns in the state that would consider $500,000.00 affordable housing. The fact that we get along just fine with “the least regulations in ALL OF THE STATE” is something we should be proud of. Many of the roadside signs prior to the election read “Say No to high density housing” isn’t that what Oxford Greens is.

  7. So, we will now have a Garden Homes “trailer park” in Oxford. Why? Because we have no affordable housing regulations, that’s why. Perhaps Keep Oxford Green will put their misdirected energy into trying to stop Garden Homes now? Good Luck!

  8. And guess what, you have Palmer and Haversat to thank for Garden Homes because unlike Mary Ann and Dave, they NEVER addressed the need for regulations. Their strategy was to fight in court, what an idiotic decision. Thank God we do not have to put up with either of them anymore. When you see either of them, thank them for Garden Homes!

  9. How can you blame Haversat and palmer for garden homes. Mary-Ann had plenty of opportunity to stop this , she chose to let zoning go to court. Read the entire decision. We lost because Zoning changed the designation of the property from industrial to corporate. This open the door to garden homes regardless of the regs. that the zoning had on file. Zoning could have changed their regs. at any time at their meetings. They did not need a grant to do this. If you understand the law and the process, the drayton-Rodgers push to incorporate into the town regulations campus style development on rt. 67 ( housing combined with commercial development) in no way can stop a developer from proposing affordable dense housing in any residential area of town that is served by sewer and water. this only provides an additional opportunity for developer to propose this type of development. So how you can blame Palmer and Haversat for this mess is beyond me. Put blame where it belong to the now defunct planning and zoning commission.

  10. director…Mary Ann cannot stop someone from suing the town, unless the town agrees to let the developer do what he wants and move forward with their plan. As Mary Ann has said, she is AGAINST these developments, but in order to control them moving forward, Oxford needs stronger regs which is what P & Z was attemtping to do. Regs cannot be retroactive, so Garden Homes could not be stopped because of new regulations, the new regulations would control NEW proposals.

Everything is about what to do NOW so that these developers have to do what OXFORD says, not the flip-side. P & Z MUST revisit the regulations and adopt new rules so that Oxford can control what gets built.

The Republicans and KOG need to stop their mind games and scare tactics because it confused the residents and politicized something that was meant to be a positive step for Oxford.

Ultimately, they are to blame for making this a much bigger mess then it needed to be and that is a fact. The only person talking about regulations was Drayton-Rogers and the need for them, Haversat and Palmer have stated the regs are fine (which they are not), so they are at fault for stopiing this.

  11. This is in response to Carol’s posting about Mr. Haversat and his career. I’m a life long democrat and have followed elections and the candidates very closely. First of all Mr. Haversat is a public servant, he had served the town for two terms and served on multiple committees. If you actually did your research you would see Haversat started a company in when he was a teenager. A New York Times article mentions a company he owned with 30 employees and yes they sold magic toys, Why is that derogatory? He ran a a company that sold millions of dollars worth of products while he was in his 20’s. I’d like my children to aspire to do the same. And no we don’t know who you are, not that we really want to. You are not the only person with the name Carol.

  12. Hi Carol, it’s Darleen, I’ve follwed Oxford politics since I registered as a democrat in 1982 and I know the facts. Not sure what you are talking about, but Haverast ran in 2003 with a former selectman and in the primary he won and his running mate lost. Palmer’s running mate lost as well, so the two were paired up. So that was Haversat’s first win. General election he had two opponents and defeated both of them by the largest majority on the Board of Selectman. Being surprised you received the most votes above and beyond the First Selectman may surprise anyone. He ran a second term and once again had the largest number of votes on the Board of Selectmen. He ran again against an incumbent and nearly defeated her minus 33 votes, 1862 residents wanted him and his strength carried the entire Republican Underticket. I believe you are barking up the wrong tree Carol.
