CHARTER REVISION
Residents will be asked to decide whether to change the town charter to make the tax collector’s position hired, as opposed to elected. The question will appear on the ballot as follows:
Shall the town of Oxford adopt the proposed charter revision, which was approved by the Board of Selectmen on September 1, 2010?
A yes vote is a vote for a hired tax collector. A no vote is a vote to continue electing the tax collector.

… this decision must be made by a few, politically motivated people. Well the people will speak and will be yet another failure of Drayton Rogers.
Funny thing is, most items put forth by MAD have passed on first try, so I would classify that as a success!
It won’t be long before the anniversary of the scandal of the Oxford democratic tax collector.
I find it odd that one parties lawn signs seem subject to vandalism, destruction, and theft while the other parties signs remain untouched in town. If this was a bunch of kids playing tricks for Halloween, you’d think that they would be more even handed. Those responsible must be so proud…
When is Oxford going to STOP and say enough to this immature behavior? First it is our street signs, then our gazebo, what else?
So when you go to the polls 11/2, remember which party is talking about the issues.
Carol, I think we may have found some common ground. This nonsense must indeed stop. It would be great if we all could focus on the issues that face our town, and this year also our state and country. Instead some waste their time and effort sneaking around in the dark as if a few lawn signs will make or break the whole election.
Also, I agree the Charter question is a non-political question. Comments like the one by Mad Hatter (calling those who oppose his point of view “uneducated”) below do nothing to foster healthy debate and reveal how partisan he is. I have stated my objections and I am fighting for what I believe in. Disagree with me if you like — that is why we have elections.
I look forward to the vote on the question tomorrow, and I will accept the results.
Question, so if the tax collector becomes a “hired” postition, and the Selectmen do not “like” the recommended candidates, they can hire who they feel is best? Or do they ask for more candidates?
If they still don’t like the candidates, or aka waste time, they can just hire the person who is our tax collector now?
Vote No for the Charter revision. The tax collector’s position has been an elected one and should remain as an elected position. Don’t let a few take away your right to vote. Vote No.

You’ve carried on a respectful dialogue with Selectman Yish. Why do you have to resort to the name calling towards OXFM?
Like you, me, DaveY, and all others, we all have a right to our opinions.
Before you come back at me, aside from calling people cowards because they don’t have the courage to stand behind what they write, I have stuck with the facts on any issue I’ve commented on.
I remind you of a few of your comments towards myself.
Let’s stick to topics, and avoid the petty name calling.
What you’ve done here is really no different than what OXFM has attempted to do.

If Oxford voters are qualified to vote for a selectman, they certainly are qualified and have the right to vote for a tax collector.
Don’t underestimate the intelligence of the people of Oxford.
Pass or fail tomorrow, the people will have spoken. It is amazing how paranoid and scared the RTC is over such a non-political issue that they feel they have to do signs, a weekend mailbox drop, an email, a robocall by Haversat (that was such a joke and made himself look foolish one again). This proud party has become the party of nonsense. Over 4 years, nothing positive comes from this group. This shows you how pathetic they have become and it is quite funny.

I do not read anywhere that OXFM has demanded anything of anyone. Like you and most who take the time to speak out … he is simply urging people to vote no for the change to our Charter. For you to call him a bully is a stretch beyond imagination.
I can almost make the argument that your insult borders on what you accuse him of being.
OXFM request to readers to “vote no” … is no different than the ODTC website which tells readers to “vote row B”.
By your way of thinking, I can accuse the entire ODTC membership of being bullies. Now we both know that’s not the case.
I can however make an argument that some of the ODTC members may in fact be bullies, in that … I have no doubt that some of the members are the same people who participated in the gazebo incident.

Just as I’ve tasted your insults in the past, you most definitely did refer to our neighbor OXFM as a bully. To quote your comment above, “Do not accept a bully telling you what to do.”
I sense you’re striving to take a softer and more understanding tone of late. You’re obviously not there completely yet, but I encourage you to keep trying.
Concerning this Charter issue, it’s an unnecessary revision which takes yet one more step in limiting the voters ability to speak.
God knows, we lack this in Hartford and Washington.
The tax collector issue did not stem with being an elected position. It entirely had to do with imperfect human nature … and a lack of proper controls. We’ll never be able to fix or entirely guard against human nature, but … we have implemented controls which should guard this ever happening again.
What OXFM is urging is simple … unless there is very good reason … we should never seek to diminish our own ability or right to vote.

There are three selectman. MADr/McKane who are the majority of the board will pick their democratic personal preference. If the third selectman disagrees, MADr/McKane are the majority and will hire their choice. Yes, this is a political issue. Don’t let a few try to take away our voting rights.
The people of Oxford defeated the Charter question by voting a big NO, by nearly 1,400 Votes! Bad for the First Selectman’s Agenda.

Ask yourself this question, why didn’t you see a big push of support from the Dems? Unlike the Reps, who had No signs, did a mailer, did phone calls, went door-to-door, the Dems didn’t do a thing.
Why? The Dems didn’t want this either!
But, you’ll soon see why because now the Reps have painted themselves into a corner and given their TOTAL support to Sharon Scinto, which was the reason for their no vote campaign.
Reps, remember, this was all about Sharon and your letters in the paper stated that, so as we move forward, remember who you supported.
