The Derby Middle School Cross Country team won a double victory against Westside Middle School in Waterbury on Thursday, October 2011, at Ryan Field.

The race was 1.7 miles long.

Led by overall winner Benjamin Garcia, the boys outscored Westside 17 to 64. Steven Stanley was second, Jason Boyko third, Joshua Vega fifth, Chris Oliwa sixth, Pedro Rodriguez seventh, Chase Boulton ninth, and Jack Peccerillo tenth.

The DMS girls cross country team won 23 to 32, continuing their undefeated season. Tying for first place with a new course record of 11:26 was sixth grader Sarah Gerckens, followed by Gabriella Prizio in third, Rachel Markoya in fifth, Rachel Fleisher in sixth, Nicole Rizzo in seventh, and Kiley Rodriguez in eleventh.

The head coach of the DMS Cross Country team is Social Studies teacher Michael Gozzo. He is assisted by DMS Physical Education teacher Jason Cebula, DMS Special Education teacher Shelley Sheridan, District IT assistant Rahul Samanta, and Bradley School Kindergarten teacher Jenny Ames.

  1. The many coaches and kids are doing a GREAT job with the running club / cross country team. It’s been in existence a couple of years now and has a lot of kids participating, growing every year and doing very well in its meets. Hats off to all!!!
