BEACON FALLS — Sometimes we get calls that make us ask ourselves, “What the duck?” Luckily, we had our quack staff ready to respond Thursday afternoon.

Beacon Hose received a call to our business line this afternoon from a staff member of the Beacon Mill Village apartments reporting that a resident saw a duck stumble over the waterfall that runs under the complex to connect a brook to the Naugatuck River. We decided to wing it.

Engine 1 responded and deployed a ground ladder into the canal. 2nd Lt. Matt DeGeorge and EMS 2nd Lt. Christian Hotchkiss climbed down to approach the duck, which waddled deeper into a pipe.

Within a few moments, the crew successfully retrieved the duck and brought it back up the ladder to dry ground. Firefighter/EMT Kristen Trzaski briefly assessed the waterfowl, deemed everything just ducky, and released it back into the nearby pond.

We typically don’t charge for services like this, but we decided to put this one on his bill.
