SEYMOUR – Vandals caused about $1,000 in damage to The Seymour Land Trust Property and stranded water snakes on land over the weekend, the organization’s president, Alex Danka said.

Danka learned about the damage Sunday (July 27).

Surveillance camera footage will be given to Seymour police, Danka said.

He said the vandals targeted the Legion Pool fishing pond, which is next to Chatfield Park, damaging several boards that maintain water levels.

Danka also said a 12-foot-by 4-foot wooden-frame Plexi-glass billboard was also damaged. He said a sledgehammer was found nearby.

John Boroski, a member of the Seymour Land Trust’s Board of Directors, made new boards to replace the damaged ones.

Danka asked people to stay away from the area until the water levels are back up to speed, which he expected to be around Wednesday (July 30).

Danka said volunteers will be keeping an eye on the land after hours, and some new surveillance cameras will be added.

Over the last few weeks, Danka said vandals knocked over park benches, broke lights on a covered bridge and strewed garbage all over the grounds.

“Our police do a great job, and we know they can’t be everywhere at all times, so we’re asking residents to keep an eye out and if they see something to call police,” Danka said.

Although once a popular swimming hole, there is no swimming allowed in Legion Pond.
