John Kirtley Glenn, Jr. peacefully passed away surrounded by his family on August 22, 2025 due to complications from a fall. John was the devoted husband of fifty nine years to his wife Constance (Connie), father to four sons, John III (Katie), Geofry, Matthew (Meghan), and Joshua (Kate), and proud ‘’Papa” to Ivy, Magdalena, and Atticus. He is also survived by his sister Barbara Ann Blalock, brother-in-law Frank (Pamela) Higgins and sister-in-law Anita Higgins; nieces, nephews and cousin Katherine (Dwayne) Garriss. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, Aunt Johnnie Scybert, mother-in-law Patricia Duggan Higgins Barker, father-in-law Frank E. Higgins Sr., brother-in-law George Higgins, and cousin The Reverend James L. Keith.
Born on October 31, 1943 to John K. Glenn, Sr. and Vivian Mae (Scybert) Glenn in Fort McPherson, Georgia, John graduated from Georgia Military Academy (Woodward Academy) in 1961, and the US Naval Academy in 1965 with a degree in Nuclear Engineering completing post graduate work in the submarine and nuclear power industries.
John proudly served in the “quiet service,” the US Naval Submarine service on the USS Lapon 661 for six years, spending an additional final year aboard the USS Dupont. He was a recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation and Presidential Unit Citation. For the following thirty-five years, John worked at Nash Engineering offices in NYC, Houston, TX, Norwalk and Trumbull, CT, meanwhile earning a patent in Heat Recovery in a Liquid Ring Pump Seal Liquid Chiller System. He subsequently became a Manufacturer’s Representative, Marine Division NE, only recently retiring from twelve years in that position.
John was known as a ‘force,’ ready to laugh, with a keen intellect, sharp wit, and for his love of family, country, music, and deep faith. He always had a sense of honor, a ready smile, respectful, kind and friendly outreach. A longtime supporter of community, music and theater, John particularly enjoyed weekly gatherings with friends, Nash ROMEOS luncheons, challenging his mind with sudoku, quiz shows, and exercise – bocce, racquetball, walking group, cardio and strength training at the SSC. A member of the Huntington Congregational Church, UCC, he enjoyed serving on multiple committees in various capacities, in addition to selling brats at the Norwalk Oyster Festival, and serving hot dogs at community summer concerts. A proud member of the Woodward Academy “61 and USNA Alumni ‘65 Associations, John was planning on attending his 60th USNA reunion in October.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 4th at the Huntington Congregational Church UCC. The Reverend Lucille Fritz will officiate the ceremony. Graveside services will be held at a later date in Maine. All are welcome to attend and celebrate John by remembering to reach out to others with respect, kindness and a friendly smile. Suggestions for donations in John’s memory may be made to Huntington Congregational Church UCC, to a veteran’s organization, or to Sage Healthcare (Bridgeport Rescue Mission). His family would like to thank the many health care professionals who cared for him subsequent to complications from his injury at Midstate Medical Center, Yale, and Bridgeport Hospitals for their care and dedication.
