DERBY — Police charged a 12-year-old in connection to a recent purse theft in the parking lot of Big Y Plaza at 656 New Haven Ave.

Police obtained a warrant for the juvenile’s arrest, according to a Facebook post from the department. It is not clear whether the juvenile was male or female.

The arrest comes after police issued a warning Sept. 17 about the thefts, which happened as people were loading groceries in their vehicles.

In the prepared statement announcing the arrest, police delineated between purse snatching and purse thefts, saying the suspect in the case stole purses often without the victim knowing.

The juvenile is from New Haven, and was charged with auto theft, conspiracy to commit larceny of a motor vehicle, operating without a license, sixth-degree larceny, and conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny.

State law prevents the 12-year-old’s name from being released, and juvenile court proceedings are closed to the public.
