DERBY — Students at Derby Middle School had to shelter in place at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday (Oct. 15) after a “serious incident” in a hallway.

“A physical altercation disrupted the school’s learning environment,” according to a robocall sent from the school.

Derby police were called to the scene.

Police were initially sent to the school to deal with a student described as out of control who was pushing through staff members, according to a review of emergency radio transmissions. Police described the student as irate.

The hallway incident apparently involved a fist fight between two female students.

A second radio transmission said there was also an issue with “several parents outside.”

The school was out of the shelter in place order by 12 p.m.

“The safety and well-being of our students are our top priority, and acts of violence will not be tolerated at Derby Middle School,” according to the message from the school.

Derby Middle School is a sixth grade through eighth grade school.

The hallway fight comes a day after administrators at the school urged parents to check their childrens’ mobile devices.

“We are reaching out to inform you that we’re seeing an increase in school-related issues stemming from inappropriate cell phone use and online chats,” according to the message. “We are asking to partner with families to promote safe, responsible digital behavior. Please take time to monitor your child’s phone regularly—review group chats, social media activity, and messaging apps to ensure conversations remain respectful and appropriate.”

Correction: original version of this story said the middle school started in fifth grade.
