DERBY — A Chase bank will be built in east Derby where a Starbucks used to be.

The plans call for the demolition of the current building at 552 New Haven Ave., at the corner of Sodom Lane and New Haven Avenue.

A two-story Chase bank with a drive-through window will be constructed in its place, according to public statements made at Derby Planning and Zoning Commission meetings in October and November.

Rod Szwelicki, a civil engineer working for property owner Basser-Kaufman of Derby, LLC, said the site will also be reconfigured so that it connects to the larger shopping center around it, which is also owned by Basser-Kaufman. The property sits in front of Edge Fitness and a large parking lot.

The exit and entrance to the property will also be reconfigured, an action that will have to be approved by the state Department of Transportation because New Haven Avenue is a state-owned road (also known as Route 34). New planting such as shrubs will be installed as well, according to the applicant’s representatives.

Members of the city’s planning and zoning commission unanimously approved the application at a meeting Nov. 18. A construction start date was not part of the discussion. The application was previously granted variance by the Derby Zoning Board of Appeals having to deal with setback requirements.
