John George “Pops” O’Connor, age 94, of Derby, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at Griffin Hospital. He was the beloved husband of 59 years to the late Mary (Spinetti) O’Connor. Born in Chicopee, MA on December 9, 1931, to the late Loretta (Grady) O’Connor, John spent most of his life in Shelton and Derby.

A devout Catholic, John faithfully attended Mass every day. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War. Following his military service, he earned his bachelor’s degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology and went on to enjoy a long career as a professional photographer.

John was an avid sports fan and could often be found behind the camera at his grandchildren’s sporting events, capturing countless cherished memories. He was a loyal Red Sox supporter and a devoted follower of UConn Men’s and Women’s Basketball.

John leaves behind his loving children: John O’Connor, Maria O’Connor Kenney and partner Christopher Avery, Michael O’Connor and his wife Christine, and Christopher O’Connor and his wife Denise. He was the cherished grandfather of Matthew, Kelly, Stephanie, Nicholas, Jessica, Ryan, Evan, Jason, and Mason, and the proud great-grandfather of Weston, Ellie, Isla, Benjamin, Cashel, and Joaquin. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Mary Gurton. John also leaves behind a very special group of friends known fondly as the “Coffee Crew.”

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Thursday, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, at the Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Road, Shelton. A procession will depart the funeral home on Friday at 10:30 AM for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM at St. Michael’s Church in Derby. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Shelton.
