ANSONIA – Heavy smoke from a fire in a microwave cleared an apartment building and closed Main Street for about 30 minutes Friday (April 24).

No injuries were reported, and the tenants are back in their residences, according to Ansonia Fire Department Chief Jay Fainer.

The fire marshal’s office is investigating.

Firefighters received a call around 4:39 p.m. reporting a possible fire at the Capitol Plaza apartment complex on 290 Main Street. Responders saw heavy smoke billowing through the third floor of the building.

Firefighters broke in a door to get to the source of the smoke, which turned out to be a small microwave fire inside one of the apartments. No one was home at the time of the fire.

“We knocked it down with a fire extinguisher, and everybody can go back in,” Fainer said.

Traffic was closed between Kingston and Bridge streets until around 5:20 p.m. Firefighters from Derby also responded, while Seymour provided station coverage.

The complex is a three-story, 20-unit building, according to Ansonia land records. It was built in 1920.
