DERBY — Derby Public Schools selected Kristin Silvestri from Derby High School as the 2027 District Teacher of the Year.
Silvestri is the English department coordinator. She teaches English II along with AP Literature and Composition. She is being recognized for her exceptional leadership, creativity and dedication to student success.
Since helping launch the AP Literature program in 2023, she has inspired students to achieve academic success while fostering critical thinking and student collaboration.
Beyond the classroom, Silvestri established the Derby High School Writing Center to support student learning. She helped bring theater back to the high school through co -directing student productions.
Known for her passion, innovation and unwavering commitment to students, Silvestri consistently goes above and beyond to create meaningful opportunities that positively impact the entire Derby High School community.
“By every measurable standard, student achievement — leadership, innovation, school involvement, and student impact — Kristin Silvestri exemplifies educational excellence,” Derby High School Jennifer Olson said in a prepared statement. “Derby High School is exceptionally fortunate to have an educator whose work continues to elevate students, colleagues, and the broader school community.”
Silvestri said she was humbled by the recognition.
“I feel really humbled knowing that I am surrounded by such inspiring and skilled educators in the Derby district. Being a teacher and spending my days in the classroom is a privilege and I feel really honored to be recognized for that work,” she said.
Superintendent of Schools Matthew J. Conway, Jr. said her work ethic is inspiring.
“She goes above and beyond every day to support her students at Derby High School. Her commitment to fostering a nurturing and meaningful learning environment makes her an invaluable asset to our Derby family.”
Kenneth Marcucio, the chairman of the Derby Board of Education and a retired teacher, said the award is well deserved.
“On behalf of the Board of Education, I congratulate Mrs. Silvestri on being selected as teacher of the year. It is well deserved,” Marcucio said.
Derby Public Schools also announced teacher of the year winners for each school.
They are:
- Meagan Torelli from Bradley School
- Cathie Marrandino from Irving School
- Angelo Ciambriello from Derby Middle School
The last day of school in Derby was June 22. Students are scheduled to return Sept. 1.
