Peter M. Duke, age 79 of Seymour, entered peaceful rest on Thursday, July 23, 2026, in Norwalk Hospital surrounded with love by his family. Born in Derby on December 7, 1946, he was a son of the late Peter and Lillian (Pelesh) Duke.
A retired U.S.P.S. Letter Carrier for the Town of Seymour, Peter loved his job and the many friends he made along the way. He was a proud US Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War and dedicated much of his time with the American Legion Post 10 of Seymour, at which he served as Post Commander for many years and even held that position twice. Peter was very involved with the Town of Seymour and was a lifetime member of the Seymour Historical Society. Peter was also a member of many groups, including the CT Redman Assoc. where he was a past Sachem for the Nonnewauge Tribe#9, as well as a former State Chief. He was a longtime member of the Disabled American Veterans, the NRA, and the NALC. He was an avid watcher of UCONN Women’s Basketball, loved fishing, was a prolific reader, a Civil War buff, fan of country and bluegrass music, and never met a cheesy sci-fi movie he wouldn’t watch. Pete loved a strong cup of coffee, was always quick with a witty comment or joke, and had a green thumb envied by many. He held especially dear time with his many friends in the “Thursday Coffee Club”. In his younger days, he loved a cigar and a glass of Jack Daniels, even becoming a “Tennessee Squire” by owning a plot of land on the distillery grounds.
Peter is survived by his loving children, Jennifer French and her husband Jason of Ansonia, John Duke and his wife Susan of Seymour, and Stephanie Duke of Ansonia; cherished granddaughter, Natasha Duke; beloved siblings, David Duke and his wife Ginny of Oxford, and Diane Dirzius and her husband John of Wallingford, as well as several adored nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind many beloved cousins and dear friends. Frank, Joe and Jack, your friendship has been invaluable over the years, not only to Pete, but to his kids as well.
All services will be private at the convenience of the family and the Ralph E. Hull Funeral Home, 161 W. Church St., Seymour, CT 06483 has been entrusted with his arrangements. Memorial donations in Mr. Duke’s name can be made to the American Legion – Emil Senger Post 10 (in Seymour), The Seymour Historical Society or the Disabled American Veterans Charitable Service Trust.
