Power Problems During First Day Of School At Derby High

DERBY — A malfunctioning off campus electrical transformer caused power problems during the first day of school at Derby High School Tuesday (Sept. 1).

The power went out in parts of the building and the phones and Internet stopped working, according to messages from school officials.  A fire alarm was tripped, too.

The first message about the situation went out at about 12:15 p.m.

Students from the high school cleared the building and went to Derby Middle School across the street. The high school students were then brought back to the high school but were kept in the cafeteria and the gym as the day progressed.

Derby emergency responders and crews from United Illuminating responded to the scene.

Power was restored as of Tuesday evening and the school is scheduled to start on time Wednesday (Sept 2).
