DERBY — A power problem on the first day of school at Derby High School was caused by overgrown vegetation on Coon Hollow Road interfering with the transmission lines, according to a facilities report shared with the Board of Education Sept. 17.

The situation caused a partial power loss at the school. Coon Hollow Road is a road that runs behind Derby High School. The building and the road are separated by a wooded hill.

The power problems disrupted the first day of school on Sept. 1 because students were temporarily relocated. United Illuminating cleared the problematic trees and vines, and power was restored by 5 p.m.

After the power failure, the elevator at Derby High School stopped working, according to the report from district facilities director Jim Hoffman. The issue was with control relays within the elevator that date back to 1968. As of Sept. 15 the district was waiting on a cost to replace, according to the report.
