DERBY – A tractor-trailer driver was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital after crashing into a rock wall Monday morning, according to a Facebook post from Storm Ambulance and Rescue Corps.
The wreck’s aftermath was causing significant traffic delays in the area and causing Derby Public School buses to be delayed.
The note below is from the school district:
Police, fire and EMS were sent to the area of Main Street and Derby Avenue at about 4:40 a.m. Sept. 28 after receiving a report of a crash.
“Upon arrival, crews found a tractor-trailer that had struck a stone wall, leaving the driver heavily entrapped inside the cab. Rescue personnel immediately began an extensive and technically challenging extrication operation,” according to the Facebook post.
It took about 45 minutes to free the driver from wreckage, “utilizing specialized hydraulic rescue equipment and techniques to safely free the driver from the heavily damaged vehicle.”
There was no word on the extent of the driver’s injuries, and the driver was not identified.
Derby PD reported Route 34 west was closed as of 7:15 a.m.
Agencies responding to the call included the Derby Fire Department, the Ansonia Fire Department, Ansonia Rescue and Medical Services, Valley Emergency Medical Services, Derby police, and Tracey’s Service Station.
Tracy’s provided heavy-duty equipment and assisted in stabilizing the vehicle to protect personnel trying to rescue the truck driver.
