Vinnie Scarlata, chairman of the Ansonia Economic Development Commission, e‑mailed a press release announcing a bunch of city stores and merchants will be donating a portion of their sales Thursday, Aug. 23 to help pay for repairs to the football field at Nolan Field.
Vandals badly damaged the field after riding on it with an ATV or small vehicle July 29. No arrests have been made.
The damage annoyed Ansonia since the field is a point of pride in the Naugatuck Valley.
The Ansonia Charger football team, who play on the damaged field, were state football champs last year.
MaxPreps, a high school sports site, just named the Chargers the 15th best team in the U.S. among small schools. Click here to read the MaxPreps site.
The following businesses will be donating to the cause Thursday, according to Scarlata:

The percentage of sales to be donated varies from merchant to merchant. The more people patronizing the businesses, the greater the donation.
“Each merchant will have their own particular means for contribution but it is based on the support from our local citizenry and their patronage,” Scarlatta said. “Patrons visiting any of these local merchants must indicate that they want to participate in the fundraiser. A percentage of their sale will then be donated on their behalf. So it’s up to Ansonia to make this a successful day of fundraising for our field repair.”
The field was damaged to the tune of $15,000. Repairs are underway.
