State Rep. Kara Rochelle (D – Ansonia, Derby) will hold her monthly in-person Community Coffee Event on Friday, December 20, 2024, from 8 am — 9 am in the private room of the Valley Diner, 636 New Haven Ave, Derby.

Residents from Derby and Ansonia are welcome to attend this event. They are encouraged to come share their thoughts, ask questions, and provide feedback on state policy issues.

Ansonia Aldermen Meetings Remain Online Only

The Board of Aldermen re-elected Joshua Shuart as Aldermanic President and voted for a measure that will likely keep meetings online-only.

ANSONIAThe Ansonia Board of Aldermen looks set to continue holding its meetings over Zoom in 2025 – but not everyone is happy about it.

On Dec. 10, Alderman Steven Adamowski said the board should begin meeting in-person again. He said that it would encourage the public to participate and that it would make it easier for board members to communicate with each other.

Those comments were made during the Aldermen’s annual organizational meeting.” That meeting lays out the schedule and procedures that the board will follow in their meetings for the year.

Coat Giveaway In Ansonia Dec. 22

There will be a coat giveaway at the Abundant Life Fellowship Ministries (195 — 199 N. Main St.) on Sunday, Dec. 22, from 10 to 11 a.m.

The giveaway includes adult and children’s coats, gloves, and socks, with one coat per person. To register, show up at 9:30 a.m.

The giveaway is presented by Life Health & Wellness Center, and it is sponsored by Bridgeport Rescue Mission and Abundant Life Fellowship Ministries.

Ansonia Middle School Teacher Passes Away

Mr. Rubin Little helped develop math and financial literacy curricula at the state level.

ANSONIARubin Little, who brought 30 years of financial advisor experience with him when he joined the faculty of Ansonia Public Schools, passed away overnight. He was 59 years old.

Little had taught business and financial literacy at Ansonia Middle School since 2019. Before that, he worked as a financial advisor with American Express for decades. 

Ansonia Public Schools announced Mr. Little’s passing in a message sent out on the morning of Dec. 17.

Ansonia Debt Outlook Downgraded

ANSONIAThe City of Ansonia is relying on the sale of its sewer system to keep its financial position afloat, according to a report from a global bond rating agency.

In a report dated Dec. 5, S&P Global Ratings announced that it was revising Ansonia’s debt outlook from stable” to negative” – meaning that, if the city’s financial direction stays the same, its bond rating could be downgraded.

A bond rating is a measure of a city’s financial health. It affects interest rates whenever a city borrows money – the stronger the rating, the lower the interest rate.

The report says that Ansonia produced operating deficits for the last two years, and that it is planning to pay for regular expenses using the proceeds from a one-time sale.

Victory Parade Dec. 21 To Honor Ansonia Charger State Champs

ANSONIAA victory parade to celebrate the Ansonia Chargers’ state championship will be held on Saturday, Dec. 21, at 1 p.m. on Main Street.

The Ansonia Chargers beat the Bloomfield Warhawks in a 58 – 12 victory on Dec. 14 to claim their 22nd Class S CIAC state title. 

The parade will leave from the police department parking lot (65 Main St.) and process down the street toward city hall. Parking is available on Upper Main Street.
