Ansonia Farmers Market Soft Opening July 13

The second season of the Ansonia Farmers Market will have a soft opening Saturday (July 13) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Farmers Market has a new location at the newly-renovated parking lot on Main Street, across from the Ansonia Opera House and Massimino’s Pizza (70 Main St.).

The recent heavy rain has wreaked havoc on the planting schedule at area farms, said Vinnie Scarlata, chairman of the city’s Economic Development Commission, so there won’t be a ton of vendors Saturday.

As of Friday, just one farm was scheduled to attend — but it’s a start, Scarlata said.

Mother Nature really calls the shots here and the weather has not been kind to our farmers,” he said.

The Ansonia Farmers Market is scheduled to take place each Thursday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and each Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Starting Thursday, July 18, customers who attend the farmers market will be receiving a handout allowing them to receive discounts on purchases.

Some of the merchants participating include Antonio’s restaurant, Cafe 252, Chez Lollipop, Crave, Eddy’s Bake Shop, Hot Tamale, Kaptan Pizza, Koi, L2 Innovate, Lewis Jewelers, Alexander’s Hardware, My Sister’s Place, Only for Her, Seccombe’s, Spector’s Furniture and Subway.

Finally, Scarlata stressed that produce sold at the Ansonia Farmers Market is truly locally grown — no buying stuff elsewhere and reselling.

We are going to maintain the integrity of our market by selling our local produce. But the downside of that is that we have to wait for it to come in,” Scarlata said.
