Derby Baby Dies Four Days After Medical Call

A state police vehicle in Derby Friday.

A baby from Derby rushed to the hospital Friday after going into cardiac arrest has died, police said.

The baby boy was just 3 months old. He died about 3 p.m. Tuesday.

The case is still under investigation.

The state’s chief medical examiner’s office has not determined a cause of death.

The manner of death is also not known at this time.

In general, the manner of death helps police determine how to proceed. For example, an investigation can end if the manner of death is determined to be accidental.

The cause and manner of death might not be known for weeks. An autopsy will be scheduled.

Emergency responders were sent to a house on Hawthorne Avenue near the intersection of Cedric Avenue just before noon Friday.

The baby was rushed to Griffin Hospital, stabilized, then taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven.

Derby police called in the state police major crime squad to process the scene. Police remained at the property into the night.

Lt. Justin Stanko told The Valley Indy Monday that the law enforcement presence at the house did not necessarily mean a crime had occurred.

In situations like this, the scene is secured and processed to assist medical personnel in determining what caused this medical event,” Stanko said Monday.

That remained true Tuesday.

The Valley Indy has not requested the family’s name.
