Update: Fatal Fire In Ansonia

A 50-year-old man is dead after a fire at 96 Colony St. in Ansonia Tuesday evening.

Police on Wednesday identified the man as Paul Czetwertynski, 50, of Grove Street in Shelton.

The case is still open and active,” Lt. Andrew Cota, a spokesman for the police department, said in a prepared statement, adding that more information will be released Thursday.

Cota said Tuesday that authorities believe the man shared the home with a woman. The two were the only people in the house when the fire started.

Cota said police and firefighters responded to Colony Street at 5:20 p.m. and saw a fully involved” house fire.

A woman said her male companion was still inside and unable to escape,” Cota said in a prepared statement late Tuesday.

Police officers attempted to enter the residence but were unable to enter due (to) the flames and heat,” Cota said.

Firefighters from Ansonia, Derby and Seymour put out the flames, then found the dead man in the house.

There is one victim at this time,” Assistant Fire Chief Edward Adamowski said immediately after the fire.

There is no word on what caused the fire, or where it started inside the house.

An autopsy is pending, Cota said, and further information will be released later.

It’s very early in the investigation,” Adamowski said.

The 1,600-square-foot, three-bedroom house was built in 1923, according to city property records, and is across the street from Colony Pond.
