SHELTON — Saturday’s massive fire at the old Star Pin factory building released asbestos into the air, according to a recorded call from Shelton Mayor Mark Lauretti.

Material from the fire was dropping throughout downtown Shelton Saturday night.

Please know that there will be state-contracted officials throughout your neighborhood the next two days to pick up the debris,” according to Lauretti.

The call urges the public not to handle anything that may have landed in the properties surrounding the fire at 273 Canal St.

Just call the Shelton Police Department, area code 203 924 1544 and inform them of the address of that debris,” Lauretti said.

Lauretti said rainfall will make the situation more safe.

Lauretti’s call comes after the Shelton Fire Department posted a message to social media Sunday morning asking the public to call state environmental officials if they come across debris from the fire.

Any residents with concerns regarding debris found on their property from last night’s Canal Street factory fire should contact DEEP (CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection) at (860) 729‑4677,” the post read.

Please advise them of the following information:

1) Location of debris on the property

2) Do not touch debris until samples are gathered by DEEP or otherwise instructed by DEEP personnel.”
