Update: Pipe Bomb Report Prompts Evacuation In Seymour

Update: Seymour police announced an arrest in connection to this case at about 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20.

Matthew Rolewicz, 33, of 75 – 12 Balance Rock Road, has been charged with one count of reckless endangerment.

Rolewicz is being held on a $5,000 bond pending an arraignment in Superior Court in Derby Tuesday.

Rolewicz could face additional criminal charges, once testing is completed by the Connecticut State Police Forensic Laboratory, according to Seymour police.

People at the Balance Rock condo complex at 75 Balance Rock Road had to leave their homes for two hours Sunday as police investigated a report of pipe bomb inside one of the condo units.

A device resembling a pipe bomb” was recovered from one of the apartments by the state police bomb squad and was rendered safe,” according to a prepared statement from Seymour police. The device was sent to the state police forensic lab to be analyzed.

Other items used to make an explosive device were located inside the apartment and were seized as evidence,” according to police.

A 33-year-old man who lived in the apartment where the device and materials were found was taken to the Seymour Police Department for further investigation,” according to the prepared statement.

The incident remains under investigation and criminal charges are expected to be filed,” police said.

The incident started at about 3 p.m. and a temporary shelter was set up at Seymour Middle School for Balance Rock condo residents.

The investigation into this incident was conducted by Seymour police personnel along with members of the Connecticut State Police Emergency Services Unit (Bomb Squad). Also assisting were Seymour fire, Seymour EMS, and Seymour Emergency Management personnel. 

There is nothing further at this time to be released,” police said. Another release will be forthcoming in the future if an arrest is made.”
