Red Cross Helping Derby Families Displaced By Olivia Street Fire

The Valley Indy received this press release from the Red Cross Thursday night. Click here for details about the fire.

The American Red Cross is helping 18 people – 12 adults and six children – after a fire earlier today on Olivia Street in Derby.

The Red Cross is providing a range of services to the affected families, including temporary lodging and help with emergency food and clothing needs.

Early in the afternoon, the Red Cross began meeting with families that had been transported from the scene to City Hall in Derby.

The Red Cross team met with each family to determine their needs, said Red Cross spokesperson Paul Shipman. Our team was on site for several hours today to make sure that families had what they needed in the immediate wake of this fire. We are grateful to the volunteers who make this help possible,” Shipman said.

The Red Cross is also providing comfort kits, containing age and gender appropriate personal care items such as toothbrushes, deodorant, shaving supplies and other items a family might not have been able to gather in the rush to escape the fire. Children’s kits include a stuffed toy.

American Red Cross disaster assistance is free of charge, a gift made possible by generous donations and the work of volunteers. For more information about the Red Cross and how you can help, visit www.ctredcross.org.
