DERBY — Five lawyers argued for an hour in Superior Court Tuesday over the Ansonia school board’s funding lawsuit against the city.
The debate centered around a budget law passed by state lawmakers in 2017 — and whether it allowed the city to decrease the school budget after it had been passed.
At the end of the hearing, Judge Barry Stevens didn’t issue a ruling in the case.

Shortly after dozens of concerned parents, teachers, and students rallied outside of Ansonia High School in hopes that elected officials would hear their cries, Team Cassetti and its lackey quickly passed off the event as a “political stunt for the Democratic Party.” Despite this being absolutely absurd, Ansonia Board of Apportionment and Taxation member, Republican Registrar of Voters, and Chairman of the Ansonia Republican Town Committee, David Papcin, showed sympathy for someone I also show sympathy for, the taxpayers of Ansonia.

ANSONIA — The public and Ansonia educators held a rally Thursday to show how a funding battle between City Hall and the school district is hurting education in the city.
Speakers included teachers and a high school student who catalogued the negative consequences of the school district’s legal battle with the city over funding — and Democrats who said the Republican administration of Mayor David Cassetti is failing the city’s public schools.
GOP leaders, meanwhile, laid the blame for the state of the city’s schools lies with the Democrats, and questioned the propriety of using the school as a backdrop for a political event three weeks before the election.
ANSONIA — A teachers’ union is teaming with school leaders and Democratic candidates for office to hold a rally at the high school Thursday to draw attention to the school district’s legal dispute with City Hall.
The rally is scheduled to begin at 4:15 p.m. at the high school, 20 Pulaski Highway.

ANSONIA — The latest step in the legal drama between City Hall and the Board of Education came Tuesday night with Mayor David Cassetti making a public offer to split the difference in a funding dispute with the school board.

ANSONIA — The state’s Board of Education voted Wednesday to begin an investigation into the city cutting $600,000 from the school district’s budget.
The vote begins a process that could result in the city losing millions in state aid for not following the rules when it comes to state school funding laws.

ANSONIA — A lawyer representing city hall in its lawsuit with the school board said a letter from the state’s education department threatening the city was “inappropriate and offensive.”
ANSONIA — The state Department of Education warned Mayor David Cassetti Wednesday that the state could take enforcement action against the city for not giving enough money to the school district.
