Layoffs are a strong possibility within the Derby Public Schools if the tax board doesn’t give more money to the school district.
That was the message schools Superintendent Stephen Tracy delivered to the city’s Board of Apportionment and Taxation Monday.

The Derby tax board Thursday adopted a preliminary, $34.9 million budget that carries a tax rate increase of 1 mill.
If approved, the mill rate would increase from 26.4 to 27.4, said Judith A. Szewczyk, chairwoman of the city’s Board of Apportionment and Taxation.
A property assessed at $185,000 now pays about $4,884 in taxes.
If the budget is adopted as is, that same property owner would pay $5,069 next year.

The school board voted 6 – 2 Tuesday to adopt Superintendent Stephen Tracy’s recommended budget for 2010 – 2011.
The spending plan totals $18,584,779 — about 7 percent, or $1.2 million, larger than the current budget.
The budget’s next stop will be in front of the city’s Board of Apportionment and Taxation.

The Derby school board will vote tonight (Tuesday, March 2) on a $18.5 million spending plan that includes a spending increase of about 6.6 percent — or $1.2 million — over the current budget.
The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Derby Middle School cafetorium.

As it stands, the proposed 2010 – 2011 Derby school budget totals $18.6 million, a 7.6 percent spending increase over the current budget.
Upon previewing it at Monday’s school board meeting, schools Superintendent Stephen Tracy said school officials must figure out ways to bring it down.
“Personally, I think it has to be lower than that. We’ll have to sharpen our pencils between now and Feb. 4,” Tracy said.
