Derby residents will see a slight decrease in property taxes under a “preliminary” budget approved by the Board of Apportionment and Taxation Tuesday (April 30).
The proposal — at $37,296,860 — would result in a tax rate of 35.34 mills. That’s a 0.16-mill reduction from the current budget.
Under the proposal, a taxpayer with a home assessed at $230,000 would pay $8,165 in taxes in 2013 – 2014, $36.80 less than this year for the same home.

The Derby Fire Marshal’s office is looking for a 45 percent increase over its current budget to help pay for new inspectors and a deputy fire marshal it will hire in 2013 – 14.
The fire marshal’s proposal — at $141,697 — was one of several department requests the Derby Board of Apportionment and Taxation reviewed during a budget meeting Tuesday (March 26).
The Fire Marshal’s office plans to hire five new inspectors and one new deputy marshal — all part-time employees who will make a $4,242 stipend each year.
The new hires will more than double the size of the Fire Marshal’s office, which currently has five employees.

It also includes two technology teachers who were slated to be laid off from the Bradley and Irving schools.
The Derby Board of Education made the moves to the applause of parents and school staff present during a four-hour meeting Thursday at Derby Middle School.

It could all happen Thursday, when the Derby Board of Education is scheduled to meet to adopt its budget for 2010 – 2011.
The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Derby Middle School.

It took tax board members nearly three hours, two caucuses and six rejected proposals Wednesday to decide on one figure — $150,000.
That’s how much was added to the Board of Education budget proposal after a marathon meeting of the tax board.
It’s a number that will still likely mean layoffs and program cuts at Derby schools.

It wasn’t a bluff.
And now, with the funding level you’re talking about — it’s going to happen again.

School leaders urged the tax board Tuesday to consider the long-term ramifications of a school budget that, in their opinion, underfunds Derby Public Schools.
Derby schools asked for roughly $18.5 million to run the district next year (2010 – 2011).
Last week the tax board set the school’s spending plan at $17.5 million.
That is $1 million less than what the school wanted, but still an increase of about $227,000 from this year’s school budget.
