SEYMOUR — Sheila O’Malley, Ansonia’s economic development director and grant writer, is one of two finalists for a part-time economic development director’s position in Seymour.
The decision on whether to hire O’Malley could happen at a Board of Selectmen meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 5). An agenda for the meeting was not posted as of 6 a.m. Oct. 4. The meeting was canceled later Monday.
The town hired a part-time economic development consultant from the Connecticut Economic Resource Center (CERC) in March 2019, but CERC stopped offering the service eight months later.
Fred Messore, a Realtor, was Seymour’s part-time economic director from 2011 to 2017.
ANSONIA — The city hopes to acquire some 30 acres of land within the Fountain Lake industrial park to attract two potential manufacturing businesses.
Details about the potential deal are scarce because it’s early in the process and governments are allowed to shield real estate negotiations from the public’s view so they don’t lose their negotiating position.

DERBY — Carlo Sarmiento, the city’s building official, abruptly resigned Friday.
Sarmiento’s departure was a surprise. It came at the end of a two-week vacation, Andrew Baklik, Mayor Rich Dziekan’s chief of staff, said.
Ansonia’s part-time building inspectors, Nick Behun and Dave Montefusco, are currently covering building inspections and building plan reviews, according to Baklik.
“The city is exploring long-term solutions including potential to share building official(s) with surrounding municipalities,” Baklik said.

The police accountability bill adopted by state lawmakers over the summer mandates that towns equip officers with the devices.

SEYMOUR — Members of the Seymour Board of Police Commissioners questioned the leaders of the department last week regarding whether enough steps were taken to make sure officers were OK after responding to two horrific car crashes on the same day.
On July 31, a mother and her adult son with special needs died after their vehicle went off Route 34 and into the Housatonic River. The circumstances of that tragedy remain under investigation.
Later that same day, an 18-year-old Derby man who had recently graduated from high school was found dead inside his vehicle, which had crashed in the woods off Clinton Road. That incident also remains under investigation.
DERBY — The Orange Police Department released an arrest warrant this week that led to the arrest of Sam Pollastro Jr. for allegedly leaving the scene of an accident.
Pollastro is a member of the tax board and the leader of the city Republican Party. He resigned his seat on the police commission Wednesday.
Orange police arrested Pollastro June 24 and charged him with evading responsibility and failing to stay in the proper lane. Court date information was not available online Wednesday.
