Derby Police Identify Suspects In 2017 Anson Street Murder

DERBY — Police said Monday they have made one arrest with a second arrest on the way in connection to the fatal shooting of 21-year-old Jajuan Benavides on Anson Street in 2017.

Police have an arrest warrant waiting for Jacob Freeman, 24, of Ansonia. He will be charged with murder.

Freeman is currently in jail for allegedly violating his federal probation. He had been previously convicted of being part of a drug-dealing gang operating on High Street in Ansonia. He will be charged with murder at an upcoming court hearing.

Rhameir Bush, 25, of Bridgeport, was taken into custody in Naugatuck on Monday and charged with two criminal counts: criminal liability for acts of another/murder, and conspiracy to commit murder.

Derby Homicide Investigation Progresses

The investigation into a fatal shooting in Derby took a step forward last week when police seized a Jeep Cherokee believed to be connected to the crime.

The state police major crime squad, Derby detectives, and Seymour police served a search warrant Friday at a property on Skokorat Street near Bunting Road in Seymour.

Police were at the property for most of the day. No arrests have been made, but police are obviously trying to build a case.

Relatives Mourn As Detectives Work Derby Homicide

Carmen Benavides sat on a curb on Anson Street in Derby Monday afternoon, just as she’s done every day since Jajuan Benavides was shot there Friday morning.

She sat next to tokens of grief on the sidewalk — candles, a framed photo from her youth, a stuffed animal, a shirt.

But she wasn’t there only to mourn the death of her 21-year-old cousin. She hopes her presence will get people talking to police and help catch his killer.
