William Petaway is also charged with second-degree assault and second-degree threatening, according to a press release from police issued Thursday, Feb. 8.

The victim is in the hospital and is in stable condition.

Police said they were sent to a residence in the 300 block on Main Street to investigate a reported stabbing at about 12:30 p.m.

The first police officers on scene found a woman who had been stabbed in the upper body. She was rushed to the hospital.

Petaway is described as a neighbor to the woman. He had left the area, but police contacted him and were able to get him to return to Ansonia, where he was taken into custody.

He was being held on a $750,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned today (Feb. 8) in Superior Court in Derby.
