A car ran off Route 8 north in Ansonia Thursday afternoon, causing traffic backups on the highway and nearby local roads.
The car, a beige Chevy Impala, slid down an embankment before colliding with a chain link fence beyond a baseball field at the Nolan Field Athletic Complex.
The crash was reported about 3:20 p.m.
The people inside the car were out of the vehicle and had made it up the embankment by the time police and EMS arrived, according to emergency radio transmissions.
Ansonia firefighters also responded to block off a lane of Route 8.
About 4 p.m. another accident was reported on Route 8 north in Shelton in the area of the exit 14 off ramp.
The Ansonia crash scene was cleared by about 4:30 p.m.
The combination of wrecks created major traffic jams on Route 8, Bridgeport Avenue in Shelton, Main Street in Derby, along with Wakelee Avenue and Pershing Drive in Ansonia.
