On Saturday, October 20, 2018, the Daughters of the American Revolution Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter, Derby, celebrated its 125th Anniversary with a luncheon at the Harcourt Wood Memorial Library in Derby.

Mayor Richard Dziekan proclaimed October 20, 2018 the Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution Day.

In presenting the Proclamation to Chapter Regent Patricia King, Mayor Dziekan expressed the City’s appreciation for the chapter’s contributions in promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America’s future through education.

The Proclamation highlighted the early activities of the Sarah Riggs Humphreys Chapter which was founded October 11, 1893. In 1901 the chapter members accurately transcribed and published the earliest Derby Town Records which are available on-line; they restored the Old Burying Ground in Derby, and they collected books and artifacts and contributed money and land in 1902 to build the Harcourt Wood Memorial Library.

On October 3, 2009, the Sarah Riggs Humphreys Chapter merged with another historic chapter, the Mary Silliman Chapter which was founded January 15, 1894. The members voted to retain both names in honor of the two women. The Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter continues to support service members and veterans, promote patriotism, and recognize the accomplishments of students through its DAR Good Citizen Award and recognize the accomplishments of area high school seniors with DAR American History Awards.

Chapter Regent Patricia King thanked Mayor Dziekan for the Proclamation. Ms. King said it is a privilege to be a part of the DAR which is a non-profit lineage society for women 18 or over who can prove a direct line to a Patriot who provided public, civil or military service during the American Revolution.
