The City of Derby released revised election results Wednesday, changing the outcome of several races.
Among the changes, according to the city:
- Republican Casey Picheco was not elected to school board.
- Democrat George Kurtyka was re-elected to the school board.
- Democrat Shane Mangado was not elected to the Derby tax board.
- Republican Judy Szewczyk was re-elected to the Derby tax board.
In addition, state law is triggering a recount in the Third Ward Aldermen’s race because less than 30 20 votes separate the third and fourth place candidates.
In the Third Ward Aldermen’s race, Republican Tony Staffieri came in third, with nine more votes than fellow Republican Jim DiMartino, who finished fourth. DiMartino has the option of declining a recount.
In the revised results issued Wednesday, Republican tax board candidate Judy Szewczyk received an additional 226 votes compared to the results issued Tuesday.
Democratic school board candidate George Kurtyka picked up an additional 225 votes. That bumped him from tenth place Tuesday into fifth place Wednesday. Nine candidates total were elected. The new total bumped Picheco from ninth to tenth.
Derby City Treasurer Keith McLiverty received an additional 210 votes.
Republican school board candidate Don Demanuel picked up 184 more votes.
Republican Third Ward Aldermen candidate Scott Boulton picked up four more votes.
Republican school board candidate Laura Harris received one additional vote.
Republican school board candidate Jim Gildea received one additional vote.
The revised numbers are embedded below.
The numbers were reported accurately from the polling locations to the city Registrars’ office.
But, in order to release the results to the public, city officials were tabulating the results late Tuesday night using an Excel program. The program crashed and the computer was rebooted, Derby City-Town Clerk Marc Garofalo told the Valley Indy.
Garofalo theorized a software failure changed a formula within the program and resulted in inaccurate results from the Third Ward.
Garofalo said Derby City Treasurer Keith McLiverty asked Wednesday why the numbers he collected independently Tuesday differed from what Derby City Hall issued Tuesday night.
Officials checked again Wednesday and found the error.
Voting results are never considered official until certified by the secretary of state.
Derby did not send the erroneous results to the state.
“We regret any inconvenience to the candidates and the political parties,” Derby Registrar of Voters Louise Pitney said in a prepared statement.
