SEYMOUR The Seymour Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause and origin of a fire that destroyed a single-family house on Patrick Drive on Tuesday (April 9).

The people living there escaped uninjured, but a dog may have perished, officials said.

The Seymour Fire Department responded to the 2,660-square foot single family home at 24 Patrick Dr. around 4:10 p.m.

The first firefighters on scene saw heavy fire in the back of the house, which extended to the roof, according to Seymour Fire Department Chief Chris Edwards. The wind helped the fire spread, the chief said.

Two adults were in the house with four dogs when the fire started. Everyone managed to get out the front door except the dog, who is listed as missing.

Edwards said about 75 firefighters were on scene, and it took about 35 minutes to extinguish the blaze. Beacon Falls and Oxford fire departments provided mutual aid on scene, while the Ansonia Fire Department provided station coverage for Seymour, Edwards said.

Wind was definitely a factor in fighting this,” Edwards said.

Edwards said Seymour Deputy Fire Marshal Rob Rockwell is investigating.

We think it originated in the rear of the house, but that has not yet been determined,” Edwards said.

Edwards said two propane tanks on the back deck of the house also ignited during the fire.

The house is a total loss. The family received assistance from the Red Cross. Edwards said he was not aware of where the family is staying.
