Gas Leak Under Control In Shelton

A construction crew doing work on Maple Avenue near Leavenworth Road ruptured a six-inch natural gas line Tuesday.

The accident was reported at 2:35 p.m. and caused several residents from several nearby houses to be evacuated.

The White Hills Shopping Center and the Mont’s Gas Station were also cleared as a precaution, Shelton police reported.

Yankee Gas responded and shut a valve to the pipe on Leavenworth Road, which stopped the leak.

The area was deemed safe approximately 40 minutes after the initial report,” Detective Sgt. Kevin Ahern said in a prepared statement.

Yankee Gas was expected to be on the scene until about 8:30 p.m. making repairs.

The incident also delayed school buses from reaching destinations during the afternoon run.
