Families dressed in costume are invited to Jones Family Farms’ annual UNICEF Family Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26 and Sunday, Oct. 27 at their Pumpkinseed Hill Farm, located at 120 Beardsley Road in Shelton.
Games and crafts for kids will help raise money for UNICEF and The Valley Goes Pink.
Activities (proceeds directly to UNICEF and The Valley Goes Pink) include: temporary tattoos, bean bag toss, gourd creature making and button making.
Farmer Terry Jones says, “This year marks the 28th anniversary of the Jones Family selling pumpkins at our Pumpkinseed Hill Farm. Over the years, we have been able to donate more than $100,000 to UNICEF as a result of this yearly festival. This will be the second year we’ve included The Valley Goes Pink.”
Jean Jones, who initiated the original UNICEF Festival comments, “We are thrilled to include The Valley Goes Pink! It’s a grass roots community-wide effort throughout the lower Naugatuck Valley to create awareness about breast cancer and the important of early detection. Proceeds support the Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital.”
Entertainment will take place on the “Dancing Dollies” stage and includes a musical performance from Shelton’s Center Stage Theater’s ‘Teen Cabaret’ on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
Guests at the pumpkin fields will join the farmers in celebrating this year’s popular theme, “The American Cowboy,” adds sixth-generation farmer Jamie Jones. “Cowpoke pumpkin carver extraordinaire, Bob Bonazzo, will ride in to carve up some of the most amazing pumpkin figures you’ve ever seen!”
As usual, guests will be able to choose fro over 50 varieties of pumpkins, squash, and gourds grown on the Jones Farm. The hayrides will be running and the corn maze will be open, as well.
And then there are the “pink ladies!” The ‘Porcelain Doll’ variety was developed by the Pink Pumpkin Patch Foundation to raise awareness for the fight against breast cancer. The farm will be contributing half of the pink pumpkin sales revenue to The Valley Goes Pink.
The ever-popular All-You-Can-Carry special is also in place. Guests will pay only $35 for all the pumpkins they can carry across the finish line.
This year, the Jones Farmers have included white pumpkins, specialty pumpkins, and even their eye-catching GIANT pumpkins in the deal. It’s always fun to stand by the line and cheer on the strong men and women at the pumpkin patch.
