In a prepared statement Ansonia Police Lt. Patrick Lynch identified the shooting suspect as Sheldon Haley, 37.
Haley allegedly shot a 27-year-old man in the “upper body” about 4 p.m. Tuesday. The victim, who was not identified by police, is expected to survive.
Police said that after the shooting Haley fled to Derby, where police there spotted his vehicle and tried to pull him over.
Haley allegedly took off, beginning a chase that ended with the vehicle crashing in West Haven.
“A handgun was recovered along the route of the pursuit,” police said in a statement.

Haley was charged with first-degree assault, carrying a pistol without a permit, criminal possession of a firearm, criminal use of a firearm, unlawful discharge of a firearm, and first-degree reckless endangerment.
The statement noted Haley is a convicted felon. According to the state judicial branch website, Haley pleaded guilty in August 2016 to sale of a controlled substance connected to an April 2014 Ansonia arrest.
Police said Haley was being held on $300,000 bond and was being treated Wednesday for injuries he sustained in Tuesday’s crash.
Both Haley and the victim of the shooting are in stable condition, police said.
“Detectives are still investigating the incident to determine the cause of the shooting,” Ansonia Police Lt. Patrick Lynch said in the statement.
A shooting near the same intersection happened in August 2015.
That shooting left a man paralyzed and sent the man responsible to prison for eight years.
