Meeting On Transit-Oriented-Development In Derby Oct. 30

The Valley Council of Governments (VCOG) was awarded state grant funds under the Connecticut Transit Oriented Development Pilot Program. The intent of the program is to assess the opportunities for promoting land uses that would support the creation of transit oriented developments in the cities of Derby and Shelton.

The VCOG has a key role in evaluating TOD strategies and implementing transportation improvement projects that expand mobility choice and enhance the linkages between mixed-use developments, higher density residential areas and public transit facilities and services. In addition, the study is intended to create an attractive gateway to the downtown areas of both Derby and Shelton.

A public information meeting to present a Draft Alternatives Assessment report will be held on Thursday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. in the Aldermanic Chambers of the Derby City Hall located at 1 Elizabeth St. in Derby. Staff will be available at 5:30 p.m. to informally discuss the project.

The project study area extends from the Derby-Shelton multi-modal center (DSMMC) to downtown Shelton. The corridor was divided into four segments to facilitate the assessment of alternatives.

The four segments are:

  • East Side Segment: from the DSMMC to Water Street;
  • Downtown Derby Segment: from Water Street to Bridge Street;
  • Derby-Shelton Bridge Segment: from Main Street to Canal Street Ramps; and
  • West Side Segment: from the Canal Street Ramps to Howe Avenue.

For each segment, several alternatives/options were identified and assessed.

The public information meeting will present the various options/alternatives assessed by the project study team and discuss the feasibility and suitability of each to achieve the purpose and needs of the project.

The meeting will also serve as a means of explaining the planning process that was followed to determine the preferred alternative for enhancing the pedestrian and bicycle connection between Derby and Shelton.

The public is encouraged to attend and participate in the public information meeting and offer their opinions, insights and suggestions regarding efforts to enhance pedestrian and bicycle connections in the area.

The report is posted below.
