NBC 30 Reveals Derby Alderman Entered The Capitol During The Jan. 6 Insurrection

Alderman DiGiovanni

DERBY — Second Ward Alderman Gino DiGiovanni Jr. was captured on video entering the U.S. Capitol building during the Jan. 6 insurrection, NBC 30 reported.

DiGiovanni has not been charged with a crime.

He is in his first term representing the Second Ward on the Derby Board of Aldermen and Alderwomen. He is also the chairman of the Derby Republican Town Committee and an appointed member of the Derby Planning and Zoning Commission.

DiGiovanni confirmed his attendance after being shown pictures of himself by NBC 30 reporter Len Besthoff after an Aldermen meeting last month.

He said he was in the building briefly, and did not damage anything. Click here for the story, which is being picked up by national news outlets.

More than 880 people have been charged criminally for their alleged involvement in the violent attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6. The federal crime of entering or remaining in a restricted federal building or grounds is a common charge among the defendants.

Approximately 140 law enforcement officers were assaulted during the attack, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, D.C.

As Alderman, DiGiovanni recently played a key role in helping a memorial to a late Derby teen be erected in Witek Park. Click here to read about it.
