New Asian Fusion Restaurant To Open In Seymour

Karaku, a new Asian fusion restaurant, will soon be opening in Klarides Village shopping plaza.

The new restaurant will feature a blend of Asian-style steaks and sushi.

It will open between Peak Fitness and Ocean State Job Lot. There are two other restaurants in the plaza — the Sandwich Man and McDonald’s.

Owner Tony Dong lives in Seymour and said he is excited to open a restaurant in the town.

I’m so happy to have this opportunity,” he said.

Karaku means good fortune,” Dong said.

He said he plans to open the restaurant sometime in March or early April. He has applied for a wine and beer license from the State Department of Consumer Protection Liquor Control Division and is awaiting approval.

The restaurant will offer eat-in and take-out options.

Dong has already put up signs saying he will be opening soon. The place has generated interest, said Matt Cassidy, manager of Peak Fitness. He said it will be nice to have a restaurant operating in the space, which has been vacant. Several other restaurants including Lisa’s Café and Moka d’Oro Café opened there, but closed.

First Selectman Paul Roy said he’s excited about the new restaurant.

It will be nice to have a different type of restaurant in town. I’m going to try it when it opens,’’ he said.

Jon Szuch, chairman of the town’s Economic Development Commission, said the site is perfect for a restaurant because it is in a good location with ample parking.

Szuch said Seymour needs more restaurants and sit-down family dining establishments, especially in the bistro and higher-end range, involving steakhouses, seafood and alternative cuisine.’’
