One Year Of Sleeping Through The Night

Susan Agamy recalls the staff and resident reaction the first morning the Valley homeless shelter was in its new building in Shelton.

The staff told me for the first time they could remember, everyone slept through the night,” said Agamy, the executive director of the Area Congregations Together, which operates the regional homeless shelter the Spooner House.

It was one year ago. Sunday, the group will celebrate the anniversary with an open house at the Todd Road facility.

Agamy said the residents were better able to sleep in the new digs because the building was more home-like and had more comfortable furniture. The 14,000 square-foot shelter has dorm-like closets for each resident, new beds and even a family room where cribs are set up for babies. The $5.5 million building can house 13 men, 13 women and 2 families.

When the new shelter opened last summer, ACT hosted its first open house. Sunday’s open house will run from 1 – 5 p.m. July 26, and will include tours of the homeless shelter and the Valley Food Bank Network. Visitors are asked to bring a donation of cleaning supplies for the residents to use to keep the facility cleaned.
