Oxford Copper Wire Theft Nets Two Arrests

Oxford police arrested two Valley men Sunday for allegedly trying to steal about 200 pounds of copper wire from Connecticut Light & Power on Great Hill Road.

It was the second time this year police arrested people allegedly in the act of stealing copper wire from the storage yard.

Oxford officers responded to an alarm at the site just before midnight on Sunday, said Sgt. Daniel Semosky, resident state trooper.

They surrounded the place, got inside, and prevented (the thieves’) escape,” Semosky said.

Police recovered about 200 pounds of copper wire at the scene, Semosky said.

Brett Baczek, was charged with third degree burglary, third degree criminal trespass, third degree criminal mischief, and third degree larceny. (Update, Jan. 15, 2013 — Baczek was sentenced to a year’s probation on Sept. 21, 2011 after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge of sixth-degree larceny).

Matthew John Cassidy was charged with third degree burglary, third degree criminal trespass, third degree criminal mischief, and third degree larceny.

Both men were released on $3,000 bond with a court appearance of June 20 at Superior Court in Derby.

The incident report indicated the suspects had cable cutters, electrical tape, cell phones and ski masks when police arrested them.

Baczek had parked at the American Legion hall, adjacent to the Connecticut Light and Power yard, and someone had allegedly cut through the fence to get at the copper wire on the trucks, the police report said.

Oxford police arrested two other men in January, after finding nearly a ton of wire in the back of a suspicious vehicle parked near the yard.
