Oxford Man Charged With Trying To Steal Generator

An Oxford man faces larceny charges for the attempted theft of an electrical generator in the middle of a blackout.

Police said Richard D. Filo, 56, of Old State Road, was observed Wednesday night (Aug. 31) by a passerby attempting to take a generator from an AT&T utility pole in front of his house on Old State Road.

Filo declined to comment on his arrest Tuesday.

The generator was chained to the pole to provide power to AT&T equipment while the electricity was out after last weekend’s storm, said Sgt. Daniel Semosky, resident state trooper supervisor.

The passerby flagged down a trooper, who went to the scene. When questioned, Filo first said he was walking his dog and lived close by.

Police allegedly found a chain and bolt cutters in his car. Filo then admitted that he was trying to take the generator, police said.

He was arrested at about 11 p.m. and charged with fourth-degree larceny and criminal attempt to commit larceny.

He was released on a $2,500 bond and is scheduled to appear in Superior Court in Derby Sept. 12.

The generator was worth about $3,500, police said.
